French
The French Department aims to encourage an enthusiasm for language learning that will help pupils to achieve the highest levels of academic success as well as giving them the important knowledge and skills of a Modern Language which they can use outside and beyond their school life. We want our pupils to engage actively with the language.
At Key Stage 3, our French curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity, build confidence, and foster global citizenship through the study of language and culture. We aim to equip students with the linguistic tools and intercultural understanding necessary to thrive in an increasingly connected world. Students will learn to express themselves clearly and confidently in French across all four skill areas—listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Through authentic materials and exploration of Francophone cultures, students will gain insight into diverse ways of life and broaden their global perspective. Language learning encourages perseverance and problem-solving. Students will be supported to take risks, learn from mistakes, and become independent learners. The curriculum lays a strong foundation for GCSE French, introducing key grammatical structures, vocabulary, and exam-style tasks.
Our KS3 French curriculum is deeply rooted in the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, which guide our approach to language learning as a means of promoting justice, dignity, and solidarity. This ensures that our language curriculum not only builds linguistic competence but also nurtures faith-filled global citizens who live out Gospel values in their learning and lives.
